E (Expanding Type Clutches and Brakes)

* Torque capacities up to:
1,010,000 lb·in
114.000 N·m
Airflex E elements are primarily used as slip clutches or tension brakes; however, they can also be used for general power transmission service. Torque is transmitted from the friction shoes to the element housing through torque bars. Engagement occurs when air expands the actuating tube forcing the friction shoes against the inside diameter of the drum. Release springs assist shoe disengagement and counteracts centrifugal force.
* Used on construction equipment, marine winches, metalworking machinery, slip clutches, and tension brakes.
* Torque is dependent upon air pressure, release spring force and rotational speed.
* Primarily used as slip clutches or tension brakes, also used for general power transmission.
* Torque is transmitted from the friction shoes to the element housing through torque bars.
* Pressurizing the actuating tube forces the friction shoes to engage the inside diameter of a cylindrical drum.
* Release springs assist shoe disengagement and counteracts centrifugal force.
* Air agitating ventilated drums available for slip clutch and tension brake applications.
* Water-cooled drums available.
* Ideal for moderate to heavy-duty clutch and brake service, and medium speed cyclic applications, which are subject to large thermal loads.
* Actuated by a neoprene rubber and cord tube, which is contained by two side housings.
* Springs insure shoe disengagement and counteract centrifugal force.
* Expanding design allows the element to behave as a centrifugal clutch.
* Side housings with reinforced slots are available when larger spring forces are needed.
* Catalog torque ratings are given at 75 psi (5,2 bar) and zero speed. Maximum recommended air pressure is 125 psi (8,6 bar).
* Available in 10 sizes identified by the inside drum diameter in inches to which they expand.
* The smallest E-element will expand into a 12-inch (305-mm) diameter drum, and the largest to a 40-inch (1016-mm) diameter drum.
* Two elements can be bolted to an adapter ring to form a dual element having twice the torque.
* Available with split side housings where there is limited axial access for maintenance.
